How to Reverse Text Online and in Excel (3 Easy Ways)

What Reversed Text Means

Reversed text is text with its order flipped. There are a few kinds, and they give different results. Take the sentence "Hello world" as an example:

  • Reverse characters: "dlrow olleH". Every letter is flipped, so the whole string reads backwards.
  • Reverse word order: "world Hello". The words swap places, but each word stays normal.
  • Reverse each word: "olleH dlrow". Each word is flipped on its own, but the words stay in the same order.
  • Reverse line order: the lines of a multi-line text swap places, top to bottom.

People reverse text for social media posts, puzzles, coding practice, and "type backwards" challenges. Note that reversed text is not the same as mirror text. Mirror text flips the shape of each letter so it looks like a reflection. Reversed text only changes the order of the letters.

Method 1: Reverse Text Online (Fastest)

The fastest way is a free online tool, because there is nothing to install and no formula to remember.

Steps:

  1. Open our free online Reverse Text Generator.
  2. Type or paste your text in the input box.
  3. Pick a reverse mode: reverse characters, reverse word order, reverse line order, or reverse each word.
  4. Copy the result from the output box and paste it wherever you need it.

This is the best option for a one-time job, like a social post or a party invitation. The tool works in your browser, there is no signup, and nothing is sent to a server.

Method 2: Reverse Text in Excel (Best for Spreadsheet Data)

If your text already lives in a spreadsheet, a formula keeps it inside Excel and updates itself when the source cell changes. In Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021, this formula reverses the text in cell A1:

=TEXTJOIN("", TRUE, MID(A1, SEQUENCE(LEN(A1), , LEN(A1), -1), 1))

Here is what each part does. LEN counts the letters. SEQUENCE builds the numbers from the last letter down to the first. MID pulls out one letter at each of those positions. TEXTJOIN glues the letters back together into a single string.

Steps:

  1. Click the cell where you want the reversed text.
  2. Paste the formula, changing A1 to your source cell.
  3. Press Enter. The reversed text appears.
  4. Copy the formula down the column to reverse a whole list at once.

Tip: If you are on an older Excel version without SEQUENCE and TEXTJOIN, the online tool from Method 1 is the simpler route. The old array-formula workaround is long and easy to break.

Method 3: Reverse Text in Google Sheets

Google Sheets has no single reverse function either, but this formula does the job. It reverses the text in cell A1:

=JOIN("", ARRAYFORMULA(MID(A1, LEN(A1) + 1 - ROW(INDIRECT("1:" & LEN(A1))), 1)))

The idea is the same as the Excel version. ROW and INDIRECT build a list of positions from the last letter to the first, MID pulls out each letter, and JOIN glues them together. ARRAYFORMULA is needed so Sheets runs the MID step once per letter instead of once in total.

Steps:

  1. Click the cell where you want the reversed text.
  2. Paste the formula, changing A1 to your source cell.
  3. Press Enter. Copy the formula down to reverse more cells.

Tip: If the formula looks like an error, check that your sheet locale uses commas between function arguments. Some locales use semicolons instead, and the formula needs those swapped.

Which Method Should You Use?

Use the online tool when you need a quick result for a post, a message, or a document. Use the Excel formula when you are reversing a column of data that changes often, because the formula stays live. Use the Sheets formula when your data lives in Google Sheets. For anything else, the online tool is faster than fighting with a formula.

One last note: reversed text is fun, but it is hard to read on purpose. If you post it publicly, keep it short, or your readers will give up halfway through.

Faster Alternative: Do It Online

If you do not want to remember a formula, our free online Reverse Text Generator handles all four reverse modes in one click. Paste your text, pick a mode, and copy the result. There is no signup, no download, and nothing is sent to a server.
